Introduction

I am a professor in the Department of Computer Science and Information Engineering at National Central University. I received BS. and MS. degrees in Computer and Information Science from National Chiao Tung University in Taiwan, in 1997 and 1999, respectively. I received Ph.D. degree in Computer Science from Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute (RPI) in the United States on December, 2006. My research interests are the areas of Fault Tolerant Virtual Machines, Cloud/Edge Computing, Smart Manufacturing, Scientific Computing, Information Hiding. I am affiliated with the parallel and distributed computing laboratory.

Representative Research and Contributions

1. High Availability and Fault Tolerance Technologies

  • Cloud System High Availability: Proposed a theoretically optimal online real-time liveness error detection method for multi-tier cloud computing systems. This method effectively shortens error validation times and distinguishes between permanent and transient faults. The research was published in IEEE Transactions on Dependable and Secure Computing (TDSC).
  • Virtual Machine Fault Tolerance: Designed a VM fault-tolerance mechanism with real-time recovery capabilities based on the KVM/QEMU architecture. Developed a "packet-aware fault-tolerance mechanism" to reduce synchronization overhead and improve overall performance, securing several patents in both Taiwan and the United States.
  • Performance and Reliability Prediction: Applied machine learning models to analyze key factors affecting VM boot times and predict resource configuration. The research was published in the Journal of Cloud Computing.

2. Smart Manufacturing Technologies

  • Production Yield Analysis and Anomaly Detection: Developed a yield modeling method based on Maximum Likelihood Estimation (MLE) and Expectation-Maximization (EM) (published in the Journal of Manufacturing Systems), and proposed a low-yield machine identification method under limited data constraints (published in IEEE Transactions on Systems, Man, and Cybernetics: Systems).
  • Process Parameter Optimization: Introduced an innovative multi-stage parameter range optimization method (MPORG) that overcomes traditional single-process optimization limitations. Experimental results showed it can prevent approximately 89% of process defects (published in IEEE Transactions on Industrial Informatics).
  • Smart Visual Inspection (AOI): Developed lightweight deep learning models (such as FN-Net) suitable for on-site industrial deployment, and a real-time fabric defect detection system for high-speed circular knitting machines, balancing detection accuracy and real-time processing capabilities.

3. Information Security Technologies

  • System and Cloud Security: Extended error detection and fault-tolerance mechanisms to detect faults and anomalous behaviors in hierarchical systems, contributing to security frameworks for cloud and large-scale information systems.
  • Verifiable AI Fundamentals: Addressed the critical but often overlooked issue of "sample size adequacy" in machine learning applications. Proposed a decision rule combining effect size and model accuracy to evaluate the credibility and stability of AI models in high-risk scenarios. This paper, published in BMC Bioinformatics, has accumulated over 350 citations.
  • Malware and Web Attack Detection: Guided research combining deep learning and semantic analysis models to propose malware and WebShell detection methods based on CodeBERT and CNN-SVM.
  • Container and Cloud-Native Security: Proposed a modular security architecture for Docker images and container deployment pipelines to provide systematic risk analysis and defense mechanisms.
